Dr. Sinéad Corrigan, LAc, DACM is a licensed acupuncturist and board-certified Doctor of Chinese Medicine with special certifications in microneedling, facial acupuncture, and anti-aging light therapies. She studied in San Francisco with Michelle Gellis, LAc, MS, a leading instructor in cosmetic acupuncture, and with Josh Nerenberg, LAc, MSTOM of San Diego Cosmetic Acupuncture.
Cosmetic acupuncture is an ancient modality used to soften the signs of aging without the risk or downtime of surgery or injections. Very thin needles create micro-wounds that initiate natural collagen production, tone muscles, and improve circulation. Treatment also includes full-body acupuncture points, because changes deep inside the body, at the level of organ function, show up as a rejuvenated complexion from the inside out.
Chinese medicine focuses on total body health, so a holistic approach can improve not only appearance but also sleep, energy, and digestion. With age, the 57 muscles of the face gradually lose tone and mass, which leads to sagging, deeper wrinkles, and a “tired face.” Needling specific points stimulates those muscles so the face lifts itself, and the endorphins acupuncture releases leave you feeling calm but energized. Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation treatment performed with the AcuMicro pen. Fine needles create controlled micro-channels at a precise depth, from 0.25 mm to 2.5 mm depending on the area and the skin concern. Each channel prompts the body’s own healing response, producing new collagen, elastin, and capillaries, while the skin’s surface stays intact rather than being burned as with peels or ablative lasers.
Over a series of treatments, microneedling can improve tone, texture, and firmness and reduce the look of scars, pores, and stretch marks. Specially formulated herbal stem-cell serums are applied during treatment. Nanoneedling is a pain-free alternative for acne, exfoliation, tone, and pore size, and can be done weekly.
Microneedling can also be performed on the scalp, with topical herbal medicine and stem-cell infused solutions, to help regrow hair. Results require a minimum of 6–12 treatments, one every 3 weeks. Treatment includes acupuncture points on the body to address internal causes of declining hair growth, with optional dietary suggestions, supplements, changes to personal-care products, and lifestyle recommendations.
Micro-trauma from the needles prompts collagen production as part of wound healing. Other benefits may include:
